Maria Chotard Marshall descended from a family of planters and businessmen, with various branches of the family settling in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Her siblings included Eliza Chotard Gould, and Sarah Chotard Dunbar. The family was prominent in New Orleans, and was associated with General Andrew Jackson.
